Below you’ll find the three general levels of editing followed by my basic fee schedule. Nothing is in concrete, as every project is different and my services are highly customized.

Level 1: PROOFREADING
A final review before printing.

- Typos
- Consistency
- Chronology
- Facts
- Layout

Level 2: COPYEDITING
An assessment of the basics.

- Usage—grammar, punctuation, and spelling
- Style—consistent capitalization, punctuation, and voice
- Chronology—contradictions or inconsistencies
- Clarity—does it make sense
- Redundancies—repetitions of stories/ideas/words

Level 3: SUBSTANTIVE EDITING
A deep dive into the stuff that makes a book work.

- Organization—related ideas/topics are together
- Expression—reveals the person behind the writing
- Flow—reader-friendly transitions between paragraphs/topics
- Clarity—ease in readability
- Gaps—fill in what’s missing
- Errors—check chronology and facts
- All Level 1 and Level 2 elements

FEE STRUCTURE
Proofreading = $30 per 1,000 words
Copyediting = $60 per 1,000 words
Substantive Editing = $95 per 1,000 words
